🌴 Sunshine Coast Road Rule Changes: What Drivers & Riders Need to Know in 2026

From July 1, Queensland rolled out a major update to road rules and penalties — and if you live on the Sunshine Coast or you’re visiting our beautiful region, these changes affect you. The reforms focus heavily on e‑bikes, e‑scooters and personal mobility devices, aiming to make our shared paths, beachfronts and suburban streets safer for everyone.

Below is a clear breakdown of what’s changed and how it impacts everyday travel across Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore, Buderim, Coolum and Noosa.

🚨 Big Crackdown on E‑Bikes & E‑Scooters

Queensland has introduced some of its toughest rules yet for personal mobility devices. :

“Police can now seize and destroy illegal e-bikes and e-scooters…”

This means:

Any illegal, modified or non‑compliant e‑bike or e‑scooter can be confiscated and destroyed.
Riders can now be randomly breath‑tested, with a legal limit of 0.05 BAC — the same as car drivers.
You can only ride on:
- Roads signed 60 km/h or below, or
- Designated bike lanes.

This is especially relevant on the Sunshine Coast, where many popular roads (Nicklin Way, Aerodrome Road, Alexandra Parade) exceed 60 km/h.

🚴 New Speed Limits for Riders

The document highlights:

“A maximum speed limit of 25km/h on roads now applies, as well as a 12km/h speed limit on footpaths…”

Here’s how that plays out locally:

25 km/h max on roads.
12 km/h max on footpaths and shared paths — including busy areas like:
- Mooloolaba Esplanade
- Cotton Tree foreshore
- Noosa River pathways
- Caloundra coastal walk

These limits aim to reduce collisions and keep pedestrians safe during peak tourist seasons.

⚠️ Higher Penalties Across the Board

Expect tougher fines for:

Speeding on a personal mobility device
Not wearing a helmet
Careless or dangerous riding
Carrying passengers
Riding where devices are prohibited

Police presence has increased around hotspots such as Sunshine Plaza, Bulcock Street, Hastings Street and beachfront promenades.

👨‍👩‍👧 New Age & Licence Rules (From August 31)

“E-bike riders will need to be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver’s licence…”

This means:

Riders must be 16 years or older.
Riders must hold a valid driver’s licence, including a learner’s permit.
Parents can now be fined if their children break these rules.

This is particularly important around schools and youth areas like Kawana Waters, Mountain Creek, Maroochydore and Coolum.

Sunshine Coast Waterways

The Sunshine Coast has an abundance of water locations from Surf Beaches to backyard swimming pools. In fact, there are more backyard pools per capita on the Sunshine Coast than anywhere else in Australia. It is therefore imperative that we who live on the Sunshine Coast are aware of the ways to ensure safety at all times.

1 The importance of Supervision – the first primary defence

The most important way to ensure water safety is supervision. In fact, supervision is regarded as one of the primary defences in preventing drowning incidents. It is often recommended that all non-swimmers and swimmers under five years of age should be within arm’s reach at all times. This Includes all children aged from 6 to 10 years Every supervising adult needs to be ready to jump in immediately if needed. This means keeping your phone in your pocket and remaining constantly vigilant. Even children aged 11 to 14 should be checked on regularly while they are in and around water.

2 Swimming Ability – the second primary defence

The second primary defence to prevent drowning incidents is the ability to swim. You need to enrol your kids in learn to swim programs as early as possible. Such swim programs need to teach Water Safety and survival skills that will equip children to enjoy their water activities safely.

3 Always heed the signs

Whether at the beach or at the pool, you need to heed all safety signs and messages. These include beach flags or whistles, PA announcements or beach entry signs. You need to follow the directions to keep you and your family safe.

4 Backyard Pool Safety

In your own backyard, you are the lifeguard, so make sure that everyone is playing by your pool rules and making good choices such as packing up all toys afterwards.

It would be a great idea for you to have a current CPR certificate, so you know what to do if an emergency arises.

5 Two basic rules for water safety

When around Water, we all need to follow these two basic rules.

Water safety rule #1

Rule One is to keep hydrated so keep up the water intake throughout the day.

The other rule is to ensure skin safety. Slip on a shirt or rashie, slip on the sunscreen and slap on a hat . Be sun safe this summer and don’t be a victim.

It is Queensland’s premier gardening event and attracts visitors from all over Australia.

Some of Australia’s leading gardening experts take part in three days of lectures, demonstrations, and workshops.

The Caloundra Street Fair is a fantastic event held along Bulcock Street, the main street of Caloundra. It is a wonderful community street market that operates every Sunday from 8am to 1pm. Many of the local traders also open to add to the atmosphere. The Fair attracts thousands of visitors as well as locals. It is designed to showcase new and regular stall holders displaying varying homemade products and services, along with fresh food, plants, herbs, flowers, art works and well-being and health products.

It’s a must visit for locals and for people from the surrounding districts. The Fair attracts a great turnout of visitors who relax and soak up the atmosphere, enjoying the food and entertainment from the many local performers. These local performers provide street entertainment and create an atmosphere that is thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend.

There is something for everyone.

During a recent visit to the Caloundra Street Fair, we came across this beautiful bird. The very friendly parrot was out on an excursion from the Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World. The bird had his handler with him, who explained that he was one of many birds representing over sixty countries. At the Maleny Botanic Garden, visitors can sit near waterfalls and watch, listen to and photograph the birds who are happy to sit on a waiting arm or head. Visitors can also take part in a guided tour through the aviaries that cover over 1400 square metres.

So come down to Caloundra Street Fair, enjoy the fun, food, coffee and browse the streetscape at your leisure.

Apollo 11 Vmax Screening at Maroochydore

In 2019, a 90-minute historic movie was screened at the Event Cinema at Maroochydore Sunshine Plaza.

Directed by Todd Douglas Miller, it was, in reality, a cinematic event that had been in the making for the past 50 years. Apparently, old 65mm movie film had been unearthed from the bowels of NASA’s archives, along with 11,000 hours of recorded audio.

The movie was titled simply Apollo 11.

It told the story of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing mission from the perspective of the astronauts themselves and the team of mission controllers in Houston Texas, along with the millions of observers on earth.

Screened in the large screen VMax Cinema in Maroochydore, patrons experienced first hand those five momentous days when astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins left the safety of Earth to orbit and land upon the surface of the moon and return safely to Earth.
